Food Security
Food Security is a condition related to supply of food and individuals access to it . The food security exists when all people, at all times have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.
What is the concept of food ?
• Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for an organism.
• Most of our food is grown on the land , so there has always been a close link between the delivery of food security and land use.
• Food gives us the nutrients necessary for a healthy body
Cultivation of crops
• The major crops of paddy in Tamil Nadu cultivated in the state over 20 lakhs 60 thousand in 2001- 2002 were cultivated.
• That is the decline in the next ten years , In 2011-212. 19 lakh 4 thousand hectares has decreased.
• Similarly, 2001-2002 3 lakhs 17 thousand has corn cultivation, which was 2011-2012 ,has reduced 1 lakhs 98 thousand hectares.
• 6 lakhs 63 thousand of groundnut cultivation is less than 3 lakhs 86 thousand hectares.
• Expect this, small grains are cultivated.
• Total 10 years 27 lakh 66 thousand hectares were cultivated and is less than 25 lakh 42 thousand.
30 years ago close to billion people in the world do not have food and they are much hungry.
The problem is that many people in the world do not have sufficient land to grow or income to purchase enough food .
Women, children and other are living with the crushing reality of hunger.
The world produces only 17 percentage more food per person today.
Four ways to improve food security
• Raise low water productivity
• Reduce food waste
• Use fertilizers more efficiently
• Target food for direct consumption.
MARUTHAM LAND
• The agricultural region is known as Marutham land
• Rain is the most important element of this region as it is needed for Agriculture.
• Rice is the staple food for this region .
• This is the most fertile region.
• Main cultivation is rice and sugarcane.
